The Definition of Understanding is a compilation of the thoughts and perspectives of Jeremiah T. Sailor, a man who epitomizes the “Black” experience. The Black Lives Matter movement has highlighted the injustices Black America face daily. Racism, an abusive criminal justice system, mass incarceration, and social and economic oppression are common obstacles many African-Americans have to overcome. Through adversity, Mr. Sailor has stood strong as a patriarch and man of faith, offering love, support, and guidance to all around him. His strong faith in God is the beacon that has guided him through the darkness. The poems and short literary pieces that comprise The Definition of Understanding highlight the value of faith and the racism ingrained in America’s social and political fabric. Mr. Sailor’s heartfelt, enlightening, and motivating dialogue will capture the soul of his audience regardless of race, gender, or socio-economic background.

Healing begins when two troubled souls from very different worlds collide—Elizabeth Spoon ("Sunshine") and Lopez Santana ("Snow"). Elizabeth is from a wealthy Idaho family. Scandal, abuse, and betrayal are deeply buried family secrets. After witnessing her father commit an unspeakable act, Elizabeth runs away to California to start a new life.  The truth is ultimately revealed after a murder-suicide in the Spoon family. 

Lopez is from an infamous South Florida family. Lopez fled Cuba with his family as a young child because his father was accused of killing a government official. He lived a privileged life in Miami, well-sheltered from the source of his family's wealth. Jealousy and greed destroyed Lopez's world on his 18th birthday. Facilitated by a plan his father set in motion years beforehand, Lopez fled to California to escape his parents' killers. 

Pain is the common thread that binds Elizabeth and Lopez. Love and friendship ultimately conquer and heal all, even the scars of murder and family betrayal.

After dealing with an unimaginable family tragedy, Elizabeth returns to California as a broken woman. The most joyful moments in her life have been mired by tragedy and loss. Lopez Santana knows her pain far too well. 

Two kindred spirits will soon combine to become whole again.  In each other, they discover the healing and restorative power of love and friendship. Their ultimate desire is a shared lifetime of happiness, which is just within their grasp as their wedding day approaches. Fate may have different plans, however.
